Wound Assessment and Management

This Wound Care Education will provide the participant an updated overview of a variety of wound types. Specific focus will be placed on general assessment components and a brief description of management strategies, based upon current scientific evidence.

Wound assessment and management is a rapidly evolving nursing specialty which is seen in essentially all health care delivery settings and patient age groups. This program will be limited to an examination of chronic wounds that discusses the importance of moisture balance and other wound bed preparation caveats, the key assessment components that differentiate a variety of commonly seen lower extremity wounds, and a review of evidence based practices that address older wound management strategies, such as wet to dry dressing use, as well as currently recommended wound dressing options.

At the conclusion of this program, the participant will be able to: 

  • Discuss key components of wound bed preparation in managing chronic wounds
  • Identify essential assessment components that aid in the differentiation of a variety of common lower extremity wounds.
  • Survey the value of a variety of wound dressing options, from older wet to dry dressings to a variety of newer smart dressings.

PRESENTER:

Myra Varnado, BS, RN, CWON, CFCN, Director of Clinical Services, Corstrata

Myra Varnado, BS, RN, CWON, CFCN, Director of Clinical Wound Services for Corstrata, is a Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse Specialist with extensive clinical expertise in Pressure Ulcer and Diabetes Foot Ulcer Prevention and Management. She graduated from the Emory University WOC Nursing Education Program and has authored numerous publications on WOC topics. On behalf of the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society, she authored the Clinical Practice Guidelines that appear on the AHRQ website. For the past 16 years, she has served on the WOCN Wound Guidelines Task Force and is the primary author of the WOCN Clinical Practice Guideline: “Management of Wounds in Patients with Lower Extremity Neuropathic Disease”.

Additionally, Ms. Varnado has published numerous wound related papers on topics including Diabetes Charcot foot management, frostbite, biofilm, telemedicine and tissue based products. During her tenure with the LSU Diabetes Foot Program and LSU Hospitals, she successfully implemented five remote telemedicine diabetes foot programs in southern Louisiana.
