Are your therapists operating at their max?
We know that therapy visits will come under scrutiny when PDGM begins January first. Nationally, many agencies rely heavily on therapy as both solid patient care, and a quality revenue generator. Because of this, CMS will be watching carefully how therapy visits are managed under PDGM.
A recent article in Home Health Care News outlines what to beware of and offers suggestions to weather the changes.
Briefly, agencies are advised to:
1. Not significantly change the frequency of therapy visits. It may be tempting to limit visits because of PDGM requirements, but that will be a red flag to CMS.
2. Mandate that therapists practice at the top of their license, including more therapist involvement with case management, supervision of therapy assistants, and covering more than exercise (i.e., vitals, auscultation, and case conferencing).
3. Explore telehealth options, setting a business plan to upgrade IT as necessary to allow for more digital check-ins and telemonitoring.
