During November, the home care and hospice community honor the millions of nurses, home care aides, therapists, and social workers who make a remarkable difference for the patients and families they serve. These heroic caregivers play a central role in our health care system and in homes across the nation. To recognize their efforts, the home care community call upon all Americans to commemorate the power of caring, both at the home and in their local communities and celebrate November as Home Care and Hospice Month.
The Minnesota HomeCare Association (MHCA) would like to encourage its members and partners to spread the celebration of Home Care and Hospice Month all over Minnesota. If you are not sure on what to do for November? MHCA members have created some unique and heartwarming activities for celebrating Home Care and Hospice Month.
For example, at Divine Home Care, a member of the MHCA, they celebrate National Home Care and Hospice Month by giving away gifts. During November, they will be giving out a weekly gift to all their staff, along with Divine Home Care apparel as a grand prize at the end of the month!
Also, each week throughout the month of November, Divine Home Care has its staff go to its main office location and pick up the weekly prizes. They attach a flier with a message describing the gift as the staff register for the grand prize. Divine’s weekly prizes and description of gifts are as follows:
Week 1 – Travel Size Hand Sanitizer because “You take a hand, open a door, and touch a heart!”
Week 2- snack size payday candy bars because “We think you’re so great, you deserve an extra payday!”
Week 3- Haribo Gummy Bears because “Our clients say life without you in un”bear”able!”
Week 4- pack of Extra gum because “The difference between ordinary & extraordinary is that little extra you do!”

From these weekly celebrations, Divine shows how it truly appreciates every one of its staff members and clients.
Another idea for celebrating National Home Care and Hospice Month comes from another MHCA member, BAYADA Home Health Care. BAYADA has a 10-week contest that is called Do What You Love, Love What You Do. During this contest clients and employees can nominate one another for following The BAYADA Way. These nominations are then sent into the office for weekly prize drawings. At BAYADA, this contest has been a big hit with its clients and the families who get an opportunity to recognize their caregivers. Also, the employees have enjoyed being chosen as the weekly winner.
Furthermore, if that was not enough of ideas for you, Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital handed out thank you cards to providers/referral sources, provided informational booth in their hospital cafeteria, distributed car wash gift certificates for staff, and quizzed the hospital and clinic staff for a prize drawing. All of this were carried out last year in November.
This year, Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital will be doing one unique thing per week, by starting out with cooking breakfast for the employees, then giving flowers, followed by giving a sweet treat, and finally potentially providing chair massages to cap off the National Home Care and Hospice Month.
Look to your peers and join in the festivities!
