Competency Training for Home Health Aides: A Train the Trainer Workshop
This interactive program will focus on “training the trainer” for agencies to complete required skills evaluations for their unlicensed personnel. The applicable regulations will be reviewed. Three different stations will be set up for participants to experience evaluation of the criteria, including appropriate objectives and teaching points for each skill task. Attendees will spend 30 minutes at each station. There will be examples of test questions at each station.
- Station 1: Temp, mouth care, hearing aids, pulse, respiration
- Station 2: Mobility, range of motion
- Station 3: Bathing, skin care, shampoo in bed, shaving, dressing
This is also an opportunity to share how to educate and encourage experienced unlicensed personnel to perform to expectations.
Note: this workshop will not address medications.
- Identify competency evaluation requirements for Comprehensive and Medicare licensed agencies.
- Demonstrate skill tasks.
- Identify teaching objectives and criteria for each competency.
- Train the trainer to complete required skills evaluations for their unlicensed personnel.

MARILYN CHAMBERS, MSN, RN, PHN, Owner, Home Care Consultants, LLC
Marilyn is an adjunct faculty member at Bethel University in St Paul, MN. Her background is in home health, case management, public health and psych/mental health. She provides regular competency testing for home health aides and educational programming for providers and the general public. In addition, she owns Home Care Consultants, a company providing education and regulatory consultation to home health agencies and assisted living facilities.
CONNIE DREYER, MSN, RN, Consultant, Home Care Consultants, LLC
With over 30 years of home care experience, Connie has worked in clinical, leadership and regulatory roles. Her background spans assisted living, private duty, PCA and Medicare-certified agencies. Her primary areas of focus are home care development, systems management, program development and evaluation, leadership, quality improvement, orientation and education, funding, and regulatory compliance. She is also a part-time surveyor for the Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC) and serves on the faculty of Bethel University.
PATRICIA CHAMBERLAIN, BSN, RN, PHN, COS-C, Project Manager for Inpatient Quality and Patient Safety, M Health Fairview East Region
Pat spent the first half of her career in cardiac nursing and in homecare since 1995. Pat spent many of those years in homecare as a Clinical Educator, most recently at HealthEast Homecare. Pat has always had a passion for educating, training and mentoring clinicians to provide a high quality of care for the people they serve and to assure clinicians have the tools to provide safe care. Pat recently made a job change and joined the Inpatient Quality and Patient Safety Team at M Health Fairview – East Region as a Project Manager focusing on quality.

This program has been designed to meet the continuing education requirements for the Minnesota Board of Nursing for contact hours.
